Abstract/ Proposal for Research

This essay will explore exactly what Wilms tumor is, and how effective its treatment options are. As a child I was diagnosed with Wilms tumor and I have first hand experience with the treatments and physicians. But medicine is always changing and I suspect there are new treatment options and plans. There are several treatments such as Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy, obviously these are used to treat the cancer, but recently more research has been done and these studies are showing the possible long term affects of them. With these treatments you might even be at a greater risk for cancer later. With Radiation you are literally burning and destroying tissues. The impact on the body is great, and rehabilitation can take months. As a person in remission and who plans to attend medical school I find research like this interesting and would like to know more about the possible effects and new treatment plans, and the effects of radiation. I plan to pursue a degree in biochemistry and research the causes of cancer.  I will be interviewing Dr. Julie Chu who specializes in Wilms tumors and other Kidney cancers. Along with this interview I have done other research on the prevention of cancer, currently all over the world researchers are looking into genes to find a link with cancer and its mutating cells, although I have not yet found a conclusive study I plan on pursuing more clinical study research. Hopefully my interview with Dr. Chu will help me answer questions concerning new research and patient treatment.
